Lesson 1: Rights & Responsibilities as a Digital Citizen

Welcome to our first lesson on Digital Citizenship. Right now you may be asking yourself "What is a Digital Citizen?" or "What does Digital Citizenship mean?" These are both great questions to be thinking about as we begin this lesson. Soon you will learn that we are all digital citizens. You will also learn that as digital citizens we each have some important rights and responsibilities. The objective for this lesson is that you will learn your own role as a digital citizen.

Lesson Introduction

As an introduction to this lesson watch the video below, when finished post a 150 word response to the question "What do you think Digital Citizenship means?" on our course blog.

Lesson Activity: Part 1 - Understanding Digital Citizenship

To understand the definition of digital citizenship you will be exploring a few websites. Using these websites create a brainstorm web using https://bubbl.us/. An example of what your brainstorm web might look like is shown below. When you are finished we will share our webs as a class and develop our class definition of digital citizenship. This will be posted on our class blog.

Lesson Activity: Part 2 - Rights as a Digital Citizen

Think to yourself about the following questions. Write your thoughts in your notebook:
  • What are rights?
  • Why are rights important?
  • What rights do you have as a teenager? How might these change as you get older?
  • What rights do you have as a student in this school?
  • What rights do we have as citizens of the United States?

Today we will be deciding as a class what our rights are as digital citizens and how we can respect those rights in our class.

In groups of three, make a list of 5-10 rights that you believe are important for anyone who uses digital media resources. Post your list to our class blog.

After each group has posted their list we will be copying and pasting the lists into http://www.wordle.net/. This website will help us to see the rights that are most important by highlighting the words used commonly in our lists.

Lesson Activity: Part 3 - Responsibilities as a Digital Citizen

We will begin this activity by completing an assignment called the Rings of Responsibility. In this assignment you will first identify your responsibilities to certain groups while offline, then you will work with a partner to begin identifying your responsibilities to these groups while online. To access the assignment click the page icon to download the file below. When you are finished, these assignments should be emailed to the teacher using the assignment form below.

Lesson Conclusion

As our conclusion for this lesson we will be developing and writing a class contract for digital citizenship. Each student will contribute to the contract. We will post the contract on our class blog and each student will "sign" the contract by posting their name as a comment. Once you have "signed" the contract, you have agreed to uphold the rights and responsibilities of all digital citizens.
